Mountain Biking in Southern California

A pretty comprehensive listing of trails in the area may be found at Socalmtb.com. This site gave me a few ideas, along with routes described in some excellent trail books.

  • Verdugo Mountains (from the West End) trail, north of Burbank.

  • Verdugo Mountains (from the East End) trail, Glendale.

  • Sawpit Dam trail, in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Monrovia.

  • Mt. Lukens trail, in the Angeles National Forest, north of La Crescenta.

  • Mt. Wilson Toll Road & Inspiration Point, in the San Gabriel Mountains, north of Pasadena.

  • Hollywood Bowl, Hollywood Sign and 3106 Ledgewood Drive, mainly a street ride in the Hollywood Hills.

  • Towsley Canyon, Santa Clarita Valley, a single track loop.

  • From the Valley to the Beach and back a long loop over the mountains to the beach, back through Beverly Hills (for total masochists only!).

  • From the Valley to Sunset Blvd and back via the Backbone Trail and Farmer's Fire Road/Sullivan Canyon. Some great single track in the Santa Monica Mountains.

  • Santa Clara Truck Trail up in the mountains above Sylmar

  • Wilson Canyon & back down May Canyon loop also in the mountains above Sylmar

  • Monrovia to Red Box via the Red Box/Rincon Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena

  • Monrovia to Rincon via the Red Box/Rincon Trail in the San Gabriel Mountains above Monrovia & Azusa

  • Mount Gleason loop from Aliso Canyon in the Angeles National Forest, starting from near Acton

  • East Canyon in the Saugus area, just north of the San Fernando Valley - a steep fireroad where I ended up trespassing in an Oil Field!

  • The upper section of Highway 39 West Fork to Islip Saddle
