Jill & Lance's Big Adventure

Saturday 1/6/2001, our good friends Jill and Lance finally tied the proverbial knot at the stylish art-deco Argyle Hotel in West Hollywood. The ceremony took place in the evening after cocktails had been served, and was held outside by the Argyle's pool with the view of the city beyond. Unfortunately this meant that it was pretty hard to get good photos of the ceremony itself since it was pretty dark. The Rev. Dr Eve presided over the ceremony, having become ordained as a minister with the Universal Life Church (see here for how you do this). She also had to get deputized for the day by the Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk of LA County. See text of the service here. Here she is in her ministerial outfit, complete with Hilary Clinton hairstyle. She did a great job and I'm proud of her. She had been fretting for weeks over the pronunciation of Lance. Jill and I, being Brits pronounce his name with a long "A" and this has rubbed on off her. Of course this would sound a bit strange to their American guests.....

After the ceremony, we all sat down to dinner. At each place setting, in a little envelope with our names embossed, we found a fridge magnet with a photo of Jill and Lance. A nice touch. They're on our fridge already. Speeches and toasts were made by best man Todd Pekala, Lance's brother, David, Jill's brother-in-law, and Jill's boss Richard Sandler. With the help of an excellent 5 piece band we danced the night away, ending up on the 15th floor in the Penthouse suite, which Jill and Lance had booked for the night. At this point, some of started to fade rapidly.....

The night before we hosted a cocktail party for their friends who'd flown in for the occasion. We certainly had a lot of fun playing host, and as we all get older no one makes much of a mess any more! The out-of-towners traded war stories about just how stuck they'd been on the 405 freeway getting to our place. Welcome to LA!

And now, Jill and Lance have gone up to Yosemite for a well-deserved honeymoon. Get some rest guys and relax.
