This is the house in which we stayed - surrounded by trees on all sides
Our New Year's Day 9 mile hike started off from this monastery up above the town of Woodstock. We were heading for "Overlook Mountain".
We didn't expect this, but here's the ruin of a hotel near the top of the mountain, which was built in the 1870s.
At the top there's this pretty tall lookout tower...
...and from the top, this is the kind of view you can see - including the hotel.
Picnic in the shadow of the tower before heading on to Echo Lake..
...down this path - much crunchy ice to slip on (I got bruises to show, in case you're interested).
We had this lake to ourselves, but people had clearly camped here the night before.
We tried a new variation on Scrabble later that night, whereby you can invent words as long as you supply a meaningful description. Here's how the board turned out.
All in all we had a great time, and our thanks to Adrienne and Mitchell for lending us their house - and the best thing was that we had no TV so we had to imagine all those New Year's celebrations going on all over the world!
